It's philosophical and thought-provoking, and the illustrations are breathtaking. In an unusual twist, the monster is driven not by evil but by longing and shame, and he is restored by the simplest human gift: to be seen. At each age, a reader's understanding of the book will become deeper, richer. My five-year-old loves the story (and anything with monsters), and for me, it's profound — a meditation on envy and desire and on our relationship with the natural world.

Giovanni has promised his mama to keep his eyes open on his walk, and he means to, but then there is a butterfly, and a puddle, and a particularly interesting crack in the pavement. Blackall's Caldecott-winning illustrations, painted in Chinese ink and watercolors, are exquisite. The book itself is tall and narrow, like a lighthouse, and the views of the small round rooms allow us to glimpse details of the keeper's daily life and feel we are there, too. Astrid Lindgren's last novel, published in 1981 and the book that inspired Studio Ghibli's beloved animated series, is a Romeo and Juliet story for children — two feuding clans, a forbidden friendship, children forced to choose between loyalty to family and loyalty to each other — but it is also something richer and stranger: a love letter to the forest, to wildness, to the particular freedom of a child who has been trusted to find her own way.
