The Little Red Lighthouse and The Great Gray Bridge

Originally published in 1942, this story about a real New York landmark — the little red lighthouse that still stands beneath the George Washington Bridge — is a true classic. I first read it with my older son when he was four years old. He loved the emotions and suspense at the heart of the story as the lighthouse fears it has become obsolete by the impressive new bridge. Lynd Ward's illustrations add the perfect amount of humanity, and the writing is rhythmic and folkloric, lending it a beautiful and well-deserved timelessness.
