The Little Mermaid

In this reimagining of Hans Christian Anderson's iconic tale, legendary author-illustrator Jerry Pinkney (winner of five Caldecott medals!) brings us a beautifully illustrated story about a young girl's desire to know and explore the world and the sacrifices and choices she makes along the way. I love that Pinkney's retelling stars a young brown-skilled girl, adventurous and determined, and that there is no prince in sight. Pinkney's illustrations — done in watercolor, pencil, and pen and ink — are some of my favorites. They're luminous and richly detailed, full of movement and texture and warmth.
