I Touched the Sun is tender and surreal and quietly wise — the story of a boy who, undeterred by his family's skepticism, flies up to meet the Sun and returns home with a little light of his own. Hayes's illustrations are spare and charcoal-gray, with color reserved almost entirely for the Sun and the life she makes possible — trees, rainbows, the shimmering sea.
